Pink Pancakes at the Royal Hawaiian

Built in 1927, the Royal Hawaiian is truly one of Waikiki's most enchanting resort destinations. Its sprawling, majestic grounds beckon visitors with an allure that has
captivated both royalty and celebrities for decades. Fondly referred to
as the "Pink Palace of the Pacific," this iconic destination continues
to weave its magic, promising an unforgettable retreat amidst the
splendor of Hawaii's shores. Among the array of dining choices at this resort, the renowned Surf Lanai stands out, tucked snugly by the beach. Set against the backdrop
of Diamond Head Crater in the distance, its ambiance exudes romance and
tranquility. Adorned in breezy pink shirts and dresses, the wait staff exude a
polished yet relaxed demeanor, perfectly complementing the laid-back
atmosphere. And apparently, the chefs here know how to make one unforgettable pancake.

Waikiki's Royal Hawaiian Resort

As my husband and I walked the beach towards the restaurant, we wondered if the famed pink pancakes would merely be a novelty, or something truly spectacular. Surf Lanai absolutely wafts with the scent of freshly brewed coffee
mingled with hints of tropical fruits, adding to the luxurious feel of this must-see destination. Spoiler alert- the pancakes are no novelty.
Everything about the Surf Lanai is luxurious, from the beautiful flower placements to the gauzy curtains that surround select tables. The staff, even at 6:30 in the morning, are all pleasant and gracious with their time. While we waited for coffee we were graced with stories about the island, secrets we should know about the best beach spots, and advice on where to dine for dinner. Every single person walking by greeted us warmly and welcomed us to their home.
If pancakes aren't your thing, don't worry. The menu is vast and includes breakfast staples such as egg and fruit or french toast. For the more adventurous, Surf Lanai also offers a Short Rib Benedict or Bloody Mary Steak and Eggs. But you are here for the pancakes, and so was I! We ordered fresh squeezed guava juice and wondered if we were about to be presented with plain ol' pancakes dyed pink; but what we received was truly divine.
The Signature Royal Hawaiian Pink Palace Pancakes are anything but your basic boxed mix. A generous stack of fluffy pink pancakes topped with fruit and toasted coconut was placed in front of each of us, and upon diving in we found loads of surprises. The bottom of the plate is glazed with a coconut sauce that gave the pancakes a rich creamy flavor we weren't expecting. We were told by a passing manager who excitedly asked, "Do you want to know how I make my pancakes??" that the secret was guava juice and beetroot powder blended into their recipe. Let me clarify for beet haters- these pancakes do NOT taste like beets. The powder is purely for color. These pancakes were light and glorious. What looked like a heavy plate of food was light and delicate with beautiful touches of fruit and cream that made this breakfast unlike any other I've ever experienced. These pancakes were a testament to culinary artistry, combining
lightness with indulgence in every mouthful. While the price tag of just
under $30 per plate may seem steep for breakfast, the experience was
worth every penny. We left Surf Lanai with hearts and stomachs full,
already planning our return to this unforgettable dining oasis in
Waikiki.
